mix series

This week’s mix is brought to you by Nigerian-born singer, songwriter and producer, Azekel. Hailing from East London, Azekel is garnering critical acclaim for his unique musical juxtaposition of old and new, combining jazz influences with R&B over a backdrop of electronic beats. UNDERGROUNDGEMSMIX is his magical concoction of musical gems from all over the globe, infusing grime from the likes of Novelist with a big dose of 70’s African disco from Steve Monite and Oby Onyioha. There’s even a sprinkle of Scottish funk… yep, Scottish funk!

Having spent the last couple of years collaborating with the likes of Massive Attack (co-writing and featuring on the title track of Ritual Spirit) and Gorillaz (vocals on Momentz and Midnite Float), Azekel’s latest release is a solo album in three parts. Each chapter focuses on a specific narrative, with the first, Family, drawing influence from profound, personal experiences mixed with wider observations on society. Family is available now with subsequent chapters, Mental Health and Youth, coming later this year.
